You need a domain name in order for people to be able to find your site. You can choose almost anything that is available.

FTP and webdesign software
Webdesign software is used to create and edit webpages. There are many products out there some very expensive. The most popular are Microsoft Frontpage and Dreamweaver. If you are new to webdesign and are not planning on doing some form of a course to learn the benefits of using this software I would advise not to purchase it. Servage offer a free basic webdesign program for download for its website users. It also has visual instructions on how to perform basic tasks.
FTP programs is what you use to actually upload your ready made website to your virtual server. Most popular website programs will such as Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage will have this capability though the setup will slightly vary between programs. The webdesign software Servage offer for free also has an ftp client built in.
Advertising
There are a number of directories online that offer free listings. It doesn't hurt to find them and put in your details. I would however advise to read the terms and conditions to ensure they're not going to pass on your details to another organisation.
Google adwords is a simple way to advertise your business. You can select your target market, say how much you would like to spend and can generate quite a lot of traffic.
Getting the most out of your site
When developing your site, content is important. Try adding useful information to your site that will target the market that you are interested in. Keep adding information as well, you want the people who find your site to keep coming back.
